There are a range of situations where an informed and experienced psychotherapeutic approach can produce valuable change. An initial discussion can itself often be productive and is without obligation to go further.
Psychotherapy is classically defined as "the talking cure" and this is essentially what we work together to bring you.
Sessions last for 50 minutes and occur at a regular time each week. They are initially scheduled on a weekly basis, but frequency can be increased if you need more support, particularly during the most testing periods of the therapy.
It is difficult to determine at the outset how long a therapy might last. However this is something we will look at initially, to ensure our expectations are compatible and realistic, and then again at regular intervals throughout the therapy as we review progress. The intention is to get the earliest possible improvement for you, but everyone is different. We work only as quickly as is compatible with securing a safe and permanent benefit for you. Entering into psychotherapy typically means a commitment of between 6 months and 3 years work to see real and lasting change.
Our work each week explores conscious thoughts and memories of your current and past life. We work to link theses with appropriate feeling states and gradually bring forward unconscious or forgotten memories and associated feelings. Working this way, we bring a linked intellectual and emotional understanding of issues that sit beneath your symptoms. It is in this way we reduce and remove the power they have to negatively impact and influence your adult life. Put simply, we reduce the power of your past experiences to impact determne your present moods and behaviour.

If you feel that your relationship is no longer a positive, mutually-beneficial undertaking, and is actually under threat, counselling can help. It can assist both individuals and couples who want to work to get a relationship going forward once again or to make that difficult decision to bring things to a close. Work is most valuable when both partners jointly and freely enter into it. Support is available to develop a plan to make life rewarding for both of you, whichever path you subsequently choose to follow. Counselling can also be very productive for couple where significant issues need to be worked through including educational issues; home relocations to home country or downsizing on retirement and decisions on care of elderly relatives.
Psychotherapy is not only about work in a long-term relationship between patient and therapist. Circumstances may dictate otherwise and productive and valuable work is possible in an agreed timescale where 6 or 12 weeks are typical periods that work well. We will still explore the unconscious processes that influence our behaviours and thinking and, as a consequence, may limit our ability to achieve and to be content with life. However in brief therapy this work is specifically focussed on the issues you bring, and furthermore, the exploration is controlled to ensure that what is opened up can be contained within the time available.
